SITTING DOWN WITH PRODUCER, SINGER & SONG WRITER, GO-JO TO TALK MUSIC, PLACES, ENERGY & INSPIRATION.

You grew up in remote WA. How do you feel that shaped or continues to shape your music?
Growing up in Manjimup (check it out) was unique not only because it’s a remote town, but also because we lived on a small property that was almost entirely self contained with no connection to a power grid or water mains, although it meant there was some extra work to be done, it also meant that you had complete freedom to be and act in whatever way came natural to you without any outside influence, it greatly shaped my character and my music by forcing me to be my own person out of necessity

Do you think it’s important for music to have a sense of place?
Absolutely, music is always associated with certain places, whether it’s the place associated with the content of the track, or where the artist was when they felt that way, or whether it’s place as a listener, I can remember parts of my life, or what my grandparents house was like, or countries ive been in by listening to the music that I was playing most at the time. Even a setting will amplify a song, weather it’s walking in the morning, or sitting in a comfy bean bag, it’s all part of the same experience

Where would you like to go and make music, and how do you feel it would change your sound?
I have always wanted to spend time making music in some of the Nordic countries, the pop legends and writers that have come from Sweden, Norway and some of the surrounding areas are my idols. I’ve also been wanting to get back to the bush to write and record, whenever I spend time there, sometimes between tours or on the way home from a festival, I get to stop in and it reminds me how recharging it is.

Robert Smith once said the test of a song is how it sounds with one person performing it alone, busking for instance. You perform out on the street a lot on Tik Tok. What draws you to it? How do you think it influences your music making?
Being able to share your music and energy when performing is always going to be the most powerful aspect of music, it can be a little nerve racking putting yourself out there but you very quickly realise that you’re having fun, and the people you thought you might be bothering are also having fun, and before you know it there’s this fantastic energy on the street.
We realised there were so many musically talented people on the street and we ended up finding people to play parts on my record Loverman

What has Mrs. Hollywood taught you? About yourself, music making and the world?
Too many things. I had some great wins with some of my previous records but this was a whole other level, it sent me around the world and opened so many doors for me to experience things that a little over a year ago that were goals on the horizon.
You quickly get exposed to more amazing people and artists and as you probably could guess your goals and ambitions grow too (which could be a slippery slope).
I’ve been able to work with a tonne of talented musicians, from sharing stages to being in the studio, the things I’ve learnt about the live music experience and the songs we’ve been able to record surrounded by so much talent is beyond exciting to me.
Musical guilty pleasures?
Classic answer but there is no guilt in enjoying music, in saying that the Taio Cruz Era of early 2010’s R&B / Pop Club jams has been getting plenty of love from me lately

Ultimate lip sync or cover track?
I haven’t seen Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls get played once without it instantly getting a room of people on the same wavelength

What song do you wish you wrote?
The chain by Fleetwood Mac, I think the writing lineup in Fleetwood Mac is phenomenal

What are 3 songs that capture the feeling of escape to you?
  • Wild Horses – The Rolling Stones
  • Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right – Bob Dylan
  • Arc – Yoste

No use explaining it, the question and the answers should tell you everything

What’s over the rainbouu for you in 2024?
Plenty of new music, Australian national tour, German festival circuit, some great aussie festivals (the backbone of our industry, go get yourself a ticket to any and all of them) and I’m sure a few videos that I hope everyone enjoys as much as I enjoy making them.
